1964-D Over-strikes
Daniel Carr, owner of Designs Computed, LLC and Moonlight Mint and designer of the NY and Rhode Island state quarters, produced these 1964-D Franklin "fantasy coins" which are overstruck on genuine Franklin half dollars. A "fantasy coin" is a piece that appears to be a coin but was not actually issued by a government as legal tender. Since no 1964 dated Franklin half dollars were originally minted, these pieces are not required by law to have a "COPY" stamp. Basically, they are just altered coins and not copies.
Carr has produced other "fantasy coins", such as the 1964-D Peace dollar, 1909-O Morgan, 1970 and 1975 Ikes, and a few others. To read more about Carr and the Moonlight Mint visit his website, www.dc-coin.com.
Two different issues of the 1964-D Franklin overstrike were produced, totalling 278 pieces. The first issue is described as "MS68FBL" and has a mintage of 261. The second issue was given a "bag-handled" finish and is described as "MS62 Bulk Handled;" only 17 pieces were produced. Both have long since been sold out on Carr's website and are available only in the secondary market.
Remember, these are NOT legal tender coins and should never be represented as such. They are not endorsed or approved by the US Mint, US Treasury, US Government, or myself. They are presented here for informational purposes only. |
